UT is dead

Post by BAR|BeerThePenguin » Fri Sep 24, 2010 12:23 am

non standard installations. weird mods that crash UT.

I have tried for the last week.

I am ashamed to say I have more luck in Enemy Territory than UT.

It all works! CYA UT

If you really need a UT fix, you could perhaps give some mods a chance. The {WINGS} servers have rocket-x, which is a faster, much better handled Strangelove. Also, Siege is very popular and I think is pretty fun. I know I've seen you play that once.

Man I just stumbled upon my UT soundtrack in WinAmp, made me think of you folks and all the good times. I really miss the days of UT99. Counter Strike: Source has taken over my life... Glad to see some of you old friends are still around, if only in the UT forums.

btw Perfection, I know for a fact it hasn't been 9 years since I played you :P I just quit playing 5 years ago.

I just might reinstall UT99 on my new rig here, see if any of the old faces are still playing Facing Worlds, or any other map for that matter; guess I can't be too picky these days.

Still getting in some servers, and reloaded UT after more than 6 years. Good to see a lot of old faces again, still trawling around Face servers...

active irc channels:
irc.gameradius.org
#speedpug
#latinopug

normal servers: (high activity)
[PURE] -|Ts|- CTF-Face -|Ts|- [ unreal://68.232.168.58:7777 ]
*face only, like old haleys but always populated

[PURE] zp| -|Ts|- * MAPVOTE* -|Ts|- unreal://63.211.105.67
*less active than first, but has vote map

COMUNIDAD LATINA #1 Armas Normales [ unreal://64.237.54.229:7777 ]
*zp server, good for pug warmups, has all the pug maps
*very fun if it's populated
*unlike pugs, anyone is free to join and leave as they please

unlimited's CTF & DM [ unreal://64.79.143.72:7777 ] [436]
*pretty fun CTF server that has relics active

UT is not dead, i still play quite a bit. there are alot of crap servers though. people tend to gather where others are playing.

haley's servers are still excellent but is not as active as it used to be. it did manage to attract a decent game earlier this week though.

Just a few corrections to MATTACK's post.

For the IRC server use - irc.GlobalGamers.net (gameradius is no more, the redirect is still working tho, but who knows how long)

& Add these channels - #HDK, #UT, #LAG....maybe #MLUT

As for the UT servers out there-

Use the -|Ts|- server only if u feel like playing against bots, cheating there is out of control (maybe because the admins cheat too?) Who knows?

Anyway, a little better is-

[PURE] High-Speed CTF-Face unreal://69.93.101.77:7777

It's only a little better, because it has bots too & the server is not well maintained, but its always got ppl on it & the botting there is at least subdued & not in your face like at -|Ts|-

& finally try -

[PURE] [HDK] Custom Facing Worlds and Thorns Server
unreal://68.232.168.233:7777

[PURE] [HDK] Low Gravity Mapvote Server
unreal://208.167.244.182:7777

The Realm
unreal://8.9.36.186:7777

No we are not crowded, but good games can be had there & the great thing is - NO BOTTERS, you don't have to wonder if that ass kicking you got was because of skill or something downloaded or tweaked.

UT is not dead, but it is in a precarious place. It seems to me that the nuts are running the asylum, if your like-minded & you want to play UT w/ ppl that give a @*&!, hit us up on the servers or IRC at #HDK

On Fridays and Saturdays you can usually find some really gg's on the Realm. Actually put relics on the server, for shits and giggles!!

dude, I don't wanna buzz kill your buzz killing but QUIT TRYING TO KILL MY BUZZ! But, seriously, even though the populated public servers are dwindling, there is still a very active community in the irc channels. Try irc.golbalgamers.net . Even High-Speed CTF-Face is still pretty active if you like normal weapons with modern anti-cheat protection. |uK|'s siege server is very active. And DexTro has at least one of his kids (maybe both?) in the game. I bet once the novelty of these new games wears off, there will be a lot of people returning.

Well then you have a routing problem, go bitch to cumcast

The thing is Penguin, who gives a @*&! about HSF, other places, better places than HSF. WTF, I dont see the HDK servers or Judges in your favorites, those won't be 9999. Get those flippers on tonight.

Yeah, I had that routing issue once when I bypassed my static ip gateway and just got a dynamic from my isp. For some odd reason I couldn't reach laggyface and a few other servers but then some other servers were reachable.... go figya...

I click on "Populated" then go from there. I had bookmarked those from my list including HSF but they are gone.

I only bookmark populated anymore.

Why is it that you get a response from every server in your traceroute while I have a couple that don't respond to pings? It seems to me somehow your packets are going down the wrong way at some point.

btw. mtr is a great linux program. It gives you much more stats than plain old traceroute, like stats for jitter and stuff.

Social and mobile gaming, and to some extent - natural input devices (kinect) have completely flipped the dynamics of this industry...
Look at farmville, angry birds...its all very exciting to watch.

Laggy Face appeared on my favs again.

Their routing seemed to have gotten repaired.

Tried to join and received a few downloads... Took a while.

Then got kicked for spectating. I guess....

How can anyone play UT out of the box anymore?

i guess that's an improvement, until they make wearable eye glasses as transparent monitors by way of OLED and the ability to use your own nipples as joysticks.

you can try running windows XP from a bootable USB flash drive.

http://thepiratebay.org/torrent/4359262 ... .USB.DRIVE

documentation
{
TO Install Micro XP from the CD

Shut down your computer. Disconnect ANY internal and external hard drives (so Windows cannot find them during installation and mess up their Master Boot Records hehe). Some computers will have trouble to boot without an internal HDD attached, check in your BIOS and, if possible, remove the HDD from the boot sequence and set the USB Harddisk as the first boot device, and the CDROM as second.

Also, now connect your USB Harddrive directly to the computer, without any Hubs in between.

Windows should install just fine, with the exceptions noted below.

Issue you will encounter during installation:

* Upon completion of the install, the system will complain once on the first bootup that the pagefile does not exist.
TO RESOLVE THIS: START MENU>
CONTROL PANEL>
SYSTEM>
ADVANCED>
PERFORMANCE SETTINGS>
ADVANCED>
VIRTUAL MEMORY>
CHANGE> AND ENTER A MINIMUM AND MAXIMUM SIZE FOR YOUR PAGING FILE -- MINIMUM SIZE SHOULD BE ABOUT 150% OF YOUR RAM -- SO IF YOU HAVE 1GB RAM ENTER 1536 MB FOR MINIMUM AND 2500 MB FOR MAXIMUM PAGING FILE SIZE.

Once everything is up and running , shut down and reconnect all your drives.

If you have troubles, please visit the forum dedicated to this tutorial.

have a lot of fun!

}

highlighted comments:
{
before downloading, make sure you have a working license key... it asks for key
mqmmq-dq3pv-rjb6r-f8w8b-9gprt
works fine.
}

summary
{
1. disconnect all hard drives, this prevents the program from scanning your c:/ for boot.ini

2. Insert usb drive. Reboot computer with cd inserted. Choose to format your usb drive, wait for the installer to finish then you are done. This is of course on a "normal" computer, havent tried on EEE.

3. use serial key mqmmq-dq3pv-rjb6r-f8w8b-9gprt

4. apply pagefile fix
}

note:
get a decent USB flash drive with reads like 20MB/s to 35MB/s

Truly - UT is dead

I can still play Doom 3. Quake (all of them).. Even World of Warcraft.

UT 99 is dead. I loved and tried to enhance the UT experience more than alot of you could know (except Keneniah, RenegadeX, Donut, ModestyB, Acid, Dextro, BigCroc, et. al. so many) but it is dead now.

HSF stole the name Haley's for a period. You have a task to uphold. Make it easy for people to UT. You took the name. Make it stick.

THX Pengy, I'm a newby (relatively speaking) but I kinda know what u have done, Acid has told me some, others have told me stuff so my hat is off to u sir. To me anyways, u were always the top dog around Haleys, so its sux to hear u say that UT is dead.

But I aint ready to throw that towel in yet. I'm trying to resurrect that wonderful ip tool that u created (damn, how many years of 'tweaking' did u do to that damn thing!!) Hopefully I'll have that going soon.

Thank you Pengy :!:

Do you have ACE working with any servers you've been to already? Could that be what the Linux.tar.gz stuff is? Laggyface (HighSpeed-CTF Face) has ACE installed now. There are several different versions, as well so even if you have one you'll have to get the right one (says Capt. Obvious). There are some weirdnesses with ACE and Linux but I believe they are resolvable. I believe it's a permissions and/or paths thing. And I'll bet money that this f&$*&@ laggyface is on a Windows server so it's bound to be somewhat Linux hostile. If you can get in touch with Dex maybe he can splain to you. Or, actually, I think he posted his solution at the HDK forum. Or you could always go straight to Anthrax, the author, at unrealadmins.org.

I like to think that even though it may seem to be on it's deathbed, UT is getting a drink from the holy grail with ACE. Way to go, Anthrax!
