Oculus Rift

I've been playing around with a DK2 since last year -- it's really not great for FPS (most people get sick, pretty quick), but some of the experiences are unparalleled. "The Chair", for example, is awesome.

Anyone else get a chance to mess around with one?

Hey Renegadex, I also got the Dk2, and it's phenomenal! Makes traditional graphics obsolete. I've been hanging out in VR-Chat ( the #1 online VR social networking platform ). Check out : http://www.vrchat.net/. I didn't know this forum was still running, checked it on a whim.

Neat! I'll have to check into it.

The "consumer" version was released to a resounding thud, but supposedly the first shipment is sold out. $600 is too much for most people for a somewhat limited purpose toy, especially when it has to be paired with a top-level PC.

I question the business plan, as well, if they are taking a wash on the hardware, and there is a lack of residual income (say, from a licensing requirement for software, a la Nintendo, Microsoft/Xbox, and Sony). How can they make money on either the short or long terim?

I check Haleys every 6 months or so, hahah. I have pre-ordered both the HTC-Vive and Oculus Rift. There is a pretty lively community sprouting up around this new tech. Reminds me of the early days of UT when things like "broadband internet" and "online multiplayer gaming" were fresh and novel things. VR is fresh and novel, and is pretty much the only really new thing right now. Yeah, I've definitely poured a LOT of money into a brand new gaming rig and the pre-ordered headsets combined cost about $1500. For those of you unfamiliar with this stuff, watch this video to get a taste of what it''s about : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RXlpn2W5G1w. Imagine things like Skyrim, GTA series and first person shooter when they have VR support!

The Rift seems to have some serious shortcomings (lack of motion controllers, worse resolution, and pissing off the community by breaking promises regarding shipping to early adopters first, not increasing the price, and purusing exclusive titles).

The Vive looks good, but the "room" mode is strange (guessing few will have the space, and it might encourage injuries) and the laser sighting system has an inherent "wobble" to it.

Honestly, I still treat the device as a short-lived experience gadget. I can't see playing a game on it for more than a half hour (or an hour, tops). The resolutions are still not quite there yet for smaller on-screen text. Game support is certainly increasing, which is cool.

I also got a "Leap" to play around with. It's the shiznit.

That's very ambitious and requires a lot of capital and retail space to run. It'd be up there with Laser Tag/Photon, go-karting, and other larger arena sports that are filling up large (otherwise vacant, in many cases) mall spaces.

I can only imagine what the liability insurance would be like...people running into each other/walls/etc...but it's a cool concept.
