What's your UT99 field of View?

Postby dkrypt » Sun Feb 01, 2009 10:31 pm

Lately I've been playing with a 125 field of view. What do you use?

Field of view is the angle of view which you see as you play (it's the width of your horizontal field of view).

Default is 90 degrees afaik. You can change it by opening console and typing in "fov x" (no quotes) where x = the numeric angle that you want to see. So for 125 fov, call up console and type in fov 125. It will change right away (you will see the difference immediately as your view either compresses or expands) and UT saves the new fov in your user.ini as a permanent change.

Wider field of view shows you more of the game, so you can see more things happening, but it makes sniping harder, and it gives a kind of fish eye view.

With a 16:10 LCD, I've played with fov's between 105 and 125.

For 16:10 screens, I've heard that 100 fov is "natural".

Some extended discussion about fov here:

That's the time it takes for you or me to have a bullet reach the target.

Low-ping trash always hit what they see, but we have to anticipate.

:P

My fov is default 90. I tried 100, 110, and 120 on Strych9's advice a few years back when {Pi} and {FOCR} were scrimming a lot, but it didn't make a lot of difference to me. He says when you get used to the fish-eye effect, it can make your game better. I'll stick with default. Old dog no learn new trick.

Depends on the map, but wide-open spaces like CTF-Face I use 120.

I've been at 130 fov for a few weeks now; that's the highest allowed online on most servers, afaik.

It's been a gradual progression for me from default fov to 130, so it never really felt weird (well maybe once or twice I had to adjust my mouse settings a bit). I feel as though it has improved my game awareness and I don't notice any fisheye effect whatsoever when playing (I'm sure the gradual progression was the key to that).

However, I remember when I first messed around with fov's back in ~2001 and jumped to 130 and found it utterly unplayable. Now it feels 100% normal, even better than "normal" used to feel. I think a 27.5" widescreen LCD helps mitigate some of the effects, too - fisheye looks less "fishy" when it's all bigged up.

Default .....cause if you suck you suck fov isn't gonna change anything  Always think its funny that players do anything that makes them feel just that little bit better.

Higher fov is comparable to having blinders taken off. It's hot :)

for ig use fov 80, otherwise use 90. sniper scope resets to 90 so using a different fov causes some lag as it makes that change. on a map like face there isn't even any reason to require a wider field of view. not to mention that increasing fov decreases the size of your target, which is definitely not a good thing. this is one of the few cases where default settings are best.

This is true. Cause I suck at UT. Just use a higher fov, so can see more. Since am not a shooter, I use it so I can see where ppl are farther away.

I remember experimenting with hotkeying a couple of FOV settings, but I don't think it stuck. It seemed too much like cheating for sniping purposes, but it helped in maps which transition from outdoor to indoor areas.

This section contains full descriptions and recommendations for UT3's in-game settings. You can use these to get a good balance between image quality and performance on your machine, however I can't give you specific instructions on what to turn on or off, nor can I provide precise performance impacts. It all depends on your particular hardware combination, and more importantly your personal taste for the trade-off between performance and image quality. To access the in-game settings, click the Settings link in the main menu, then refer to the relevant sections below. Make sure to click the Apply button each time you change any settings, and note that some settings require a restart of the game to be applied properly.I have for ig use fov 80, otherwise use 90.sniper scope resets to 90 so using a different fov causes some lag as it makes that change.Thanks.
